Generators

home stand-by generator

Generators use fuel gas, typically propane or natural gas, to produce electricity for our homes/buildings during a power outage. These units should be installed according to manufacturer’s specifications and local/state codes. Inspectors typically do not have access to this information, but, in general, the generator should be at least 5 feet from a structure or opening, at least 10 feet from HVAC intakes, vents, or exhaust ports, and 10-15 feet away from neighboring houses, with the exhaust directed away from all buildings. Be sure to check with the installer and/or local building official to verify proper installation.

Please note that an improperly installed generator can present a serious safety issue, especially related to carbon monoxide. Be sure to have the property’s generator inspected by a qualified generator contractor prior to the end of the inspection period and maintained and serviced on a regular basis.
